In 2016, following the action taken by the Primates of the Anglican Communion which imposed "consequences" upon The Episcopal Church (TEC) for its action in allowing marriages to take place among same-sex couples, the District Church Council of St George's Church voted to show our solidarity with The Episcopal Church by establishing a "sister church" relationship with a TEC parish in the USA. St George's, and the Parish of East Greenwich, are happy to be members of the Inclusive Church network, and we welcome everyone regardless of "economic power, gender, mental health, physical ability, race or sexuality."
Grace Episcopal Church in Oak Park, Illinois was the sending church of our current Team Vicar, and several members of that community have worshipped with us at St George's since Tim's arrival. John Seaton, a tenor in the Grace Church choir, has visited several times, and pitched in with the Christmas decorating of St George's. Dennis Northway, the parish musician, has worshipped with us, helped clear out our old coal room, and even tuned the organ while he was here. Grace Church therefore became a natural pick for us. We invited them to enter into a "sister church" relationship, and they agreed! In celebration of that relationship, in the summer of 2016, the Rector of Grace Church, the Revd Shawn Schreiner, and her wife Vicki Garvey, the Director of Spiritual Formation in the Diocese of Chicago, visited St George's and were warmly received by our congregation.
Grace is a faith community which shares similar values and goals as St George's, including priorities of working with youth and children, exploring our faith, and community service. Like St George's, Grace hosts a winter night shelter for the homeless in the Chicago area. We look forward deepening our relationship with Grace, learning from each other, and together working for the Kingdom of God.
